WHY NANOTECHNOLOGY?
Nanotechnology is a field that carries the utmost strategic importance for both research and application spheres. This strategic importance holds true for Turkey as well. It is worth noting that the institution that defines and drives Turkey’s effort in national science and technology policies, TUBITAK, defined nanotechnology as a prioritized field in their foresight report, “Vision 2023”.
When we look at the Nanotechnology field, we see strong connections with dense material physics, chemistry, engineering sciences, molecular biology, genetics and material sciences thus making it both interdisciplinary and above technology. We believe that this process will be affecting our daily lives sooner than anticipated.
In Turkey, there are efforts to found institutions that will support the technological progress in the area of nanotechnology. The most obvious example is textiles; for this sector technological expansions that would allow the industry to achieve new qualities are among targets. It’s encouraging to know that research project with the aim of creating textile products that do can not be stained, do not absorb water or even protect people from harmful rays are well under way. Nanotechnology research can even be used to tackle one of the most prominent problems of Turkey, energy shortage.
